On facing walls, in their own voices,
a father and a daughter tell their story.

Fritz, born in Vienna in 1922, fled
Europe alone as an adolescent, lived
in three countries, had three names,
and knew three languages. “You can
never be too careful” was his motto. 
He speaks on the left wall.

Karen, a first-generation American,
grew up in New York in the 1960s
and 70s. She believed in taking risks.
She speaks on the right wall.

This work is part of a memoir, “The Art
of Being a Stranger,” forthcoming from
the University of Toronto Press in 2025.

con parole sue, un padre e una figlia
raccontano la loro storia.
